I will be tackling a big patio addition project this spring and summer and have a couple questions for the group. The patio dimensions will be 22' wide (this will be tieing into the existing garage) and 24' long. I will be following the pitch of the existing asphalt shingled hipped roof for the 24' addition.
My question is the following: I would only like to use two posts at the end of the roof (14" x 14") and I would like to run engineered wood the entire 24' span. Can I do this with 4 - 2"x12" running vertically or should I use 10 - 2"x6" running horrizontally. I live in the northern part of Houston so there will not be any snow to consider for the live load. There won't be any storage above either as it is an outdoor patio. I also plan on setting the post in the ground and having the concrete slab poured after. How deep do the posts need to be in the ground? The top will be at 10' above ground. Thanks in advance.
