Why I Built These Desk Bookshelf Hutch Towers

A couple years ago, I built this desk (plans here)

This desk has been GREAT and it is a forever solution, a perfect fit between the wood beams in my house.

But the problem was the desktop would get cluttered because there just wasn't enough storage at the desk area.  I needed somewhere for things like binders and books, baskets, paper and decor to go.

The problem with buying hutch towers was 1) Each tower would cost $500 2) I needed slightly different widths for the towers because the space between the windows and the beams were an inch different 3) I wanted something that matched my desk in style and paint finish.

How Has The Desk and Hutches Held Up?

I built the desk bases a few years ago and they are doing awesome!  The hutches I built about a year ago (finally getting around to posting the plans) and they look brand new and have been tremendously helpful in cleaning up the desk system.

Built-In Pantry Shelving

A pantry is a must have on any house I build.  I design my kitchens to hold tools (dishes, mixing bowls, pots and pans, cutting boards, etc) and spices and coffee.  That's it. Everything else goes in the pantry.  Yes, everything.  If it regularly rotates out, it needs to be on open shelving in the pantry.  That way you don't end up with expired cans in deep drawers or moldy bread at the back of the shelf.  Or maybe worse, you can't access and inventory what you have quickly and easily.

Even though this house is small, we made sure to include a pantry right in the middle of the kitchen.

This week, we are tackling the pantry shelving.  We want to put the right shelving in that can last a lifetime and won't need to be ripped out or changed later.  You might as well do it right the first time, it saves you time and money in the long run.

Here's what we came up with as a final result:

And an inside look. 

It was some work to add the corner, but it was worth it for the more accessible storage.

Minimalist Modern Dining Table Pedestal for Round or Square Tabletop

Why I Build this Modern Pedestal for a Round or Square Tabletop

I have been dreaming of building this base for a long time - it is so beautiful and with the solid design, minimizes the overall business of a room, as chair legs are hidden.

I had a 60" round dining table top that I built a few years ago, and thought this would be the perfect chance to upgrade the base, give it an overall new look, and try out a new plan design.

Here's the dining table without chairs, I am using it paired with my easy to building dining banquette that I built last year.

Can you see how this base doesn't look busy with chairs?  I love that about this dining table base!

 

How I Built this Modern Pedestal Dining Table Base - Video Tutorial

This is actually a pretty substantial project and quite heavy.  I wanted it to feel solid, not like a hollow core door, so I built it using 3/4" plywood.  You could also use pine project panels if matching a pine or softwood tabletop.
