My water heater just had the elements burn out, so I drained the tank to pull the elements. The bottom element was completely warped and twisted to the point it snapped in one place and looked like it might be slightly corroded. I'd like to clean out the sediment before replacing the element so the next one doesn't burn out right away.
1) The water heater is in the basement away from any spigot, so backflushing through the drain valve isn't an option. Any tricks to get the sediment out of the bottom of the tank? I was thinking maybe a ShopVac?
2) Being that the element looked maybe corroded, would it be worth swapping the anode rod? The water heater is only a year old, but we have hard water and a water softening system.
