Stud location different from top and bottom

Trying to mount tv above the fireplace. Used a stud finder and located the stud and thought everything was fine. Started to drill my fire hole using the template that the mount included, then thought to mark the stud on the top of the template just to find out it different from the bottom. Hope the picture does a better job explaining. wall mount template

Never encountered this before, any thoughts?
