I'm deep into a lamp dimmer replacement and I just realized I made the rookie mistake of not examining the connections prior to ripping things apart. The new dimmer is different in some ways that I want to check with the experts before continuing.
- New dimmer has ground terminals, but the cord and lamp are two-conductor, with a polarized plug. Should I even use this dimmer? Am I going to electrify my lamp?
- I failed to note which side was connected to the mains, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the side with the bulb symbol (circle with X) is the lamp side. Is that right?
- The cord is standard 18AWG two-conductor with a ridge on the insulation for the neutral wire. Question is, for both the lamp and mains side, which terminal takes the neutral wire?
Thanks for taking a look, and feel free to take pot shots at me for failing to note the connections BEFORE snipping the wires free :D Hey, it was a busy day and the wife demanded I get started!
Lastly, maybe this would be better in r/Electrical?
