Fenced backyard of a rental property - cheap options for dog-friendly? Too many trees above.

So I have a backyard that’s about 30 sq ft. Sorry I won’t have pictures since I’m away on vacation.

Here are the factors to work with:

  • rental unit - no major renovations - $300 total budget with some wiggle room
  • Concrete patio area, about 10 sqft, next to sliding door. Dirt on all 3 other sides
  • trees in backyard drop fruits all summer. Seeds and leaves.
  • can easily sweep dirt and stuff under the fence (Goes into a shrubbery forest thing)
  • cold climate (Michigan). Need to handle extreme weather.
  • concrete area is currently 3 inches taller than the dirt.
  • dirt is not level.

We will be using the backyard for:

  • dog training - as much run space as possible. Minimum debris to avoid dog from getting hurt or eating something.
  • outdoor grilling
  • would be nice to chill outside during summer
  • want to minimize dirt on ground. Dog will lie on the ground and I don’t want her super dirty after every outdoor session!
  • needs to be pee-friendly if possible without getting too dirty. If not then forget that part!

I’m currently considering those modular wooden tiles, debris can fall between cracks and we won’t be here long enough for the debris to really build up enough. But what do we do about the trees above? Thinking of a balcony cover but then I gotta worry about the weather issues. I’d prefer something that won’t require any upkeep or maybe the occasional sweep.
