I have a cheap Ikea bookshelf that I want to remove the backing from, so I can see the nicely painted wall behind it. It's flimsy and won't stand up without the backing. There's only one stud behind the bookshelf and I don't want to move it. Can I just drill one brace to the stud and the second through the drywall? Should I use a plastic anchor or something, or is a woodscrew enough? The bookshelf is only going to carry a moderate amount of weight. Some books on the lower levels, art supplies and plants. Should I also brace the corners?
