My ceiling fan electrical box is too narrow for a new fan's bracket - does that mean it's incompatible?

I removed an old fan with lights today. When I went to replace it the fan bracket was too wide for the box despite being a similar fan. I can imagine I drill into the drywall, do I just need a different fan?
