Replacing sconces in 1920s house

I'm trying to replace the old, ugly sconces in my house, and hit a bit of a snag. The old sconces were the kind that have a center stud that screws into the box. The new sconces have a bracket that's supposed to screw into the sides of the junction box. The problem is that either the junction box doesn't have screw holes, or they're buried beneath the plaster.

This is the junction box: https://i.imgur.com/AzvXIqn.jpg
This is what the new bracket looks like: https://i.imgur.com/TWUYqqh.jpg

What's my best bet here? It seems like I could try digging around in the plaster to see if I could find a screw hole on the junction box. But then the junction box is back behind the plaster instead of flush with it, would that even work? Or maybe I need to replace the junction box?
