Advice: need durable coating for wood toolbox

I’m making a custom wooden toolbox for my work tools and I’m getting close to needing the coating. I’m using angle aluminum on the corners and angles and I want to use something hard and durable like bedliner to coat the wood with.

I’ve actually tried bedliner on wood in the past and it just doesn’t adhere long term, even with primer. I know of a paint called DuraTex that is super hard but it’s $70 gallon, but I need something cheaper. Any ideas?
