Issue: During the summer months, our house in Upstate NY becomes unbearable on days over 80F due to humidity. All windows in the house are casement windows.
Goal: Cool off the second story of our house without the use of AC. We need to make it more bearable than it is...
Info: The house was built in 1880 as a small single story home. In 1924, the second story was added, and in 1972, the house was completely remodeled. There is no attic in the house - the bedrooms all have split ceilings where the cottage style roofing cuts in, so all rooms are directly touching the roof via the ceiling. The stairwell hugs the north side of the house and has a single window towards the top-middle of the entry way. Also want to note that there are no dormer vents of any kind - just a small ridge vent that I don't think is doing much. When all windows downstairs are open, you can feel the stairwell window trying to vent, but I don't feel it's enough to keep all the other rooms connected to the stairwell cool, even when we have window fans on exhaust, because the draft just isn't strong enough to come up and around the stairwell and into each room.
I've looked into whole house venting systems, but I'm not sure if it would solve our issue because each room has different conditions. One faces more the north, one to the south, one to the south and west (this is the worst room). I've thought about adding dormer vents above each room, but not sure if that would help much. The other option was adding inline vents, but again, not sure if that would be effective. Our rooms are kinda weird due to those half ceilings cutting across the room, so we don't have a flat ceiling in any of the upstairs rooms, except in the stairwell.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for the help!
