Exterior light mounting

I am planning to replace our "classic" exterior lights with some new ones I picked up this week.

My question is regarding how I should mount these on our vinyl siding. The existing lights weren't mounted very well and look like they would be susceptible to t rain.

How should I go about mounting these? I've read about surface block, but they all sound like I need to remove siding to use these. Should I just shim the bottom so the to sure flush with the siding? Then caulk around the light mounting plate?
