My brother recently bought a home and wanted to replace the carpet in a room with hardwood. He’s done quite a bit of research and we are just about ready to embark, but have a question. Under the carpet there were 1/2” sheets of temple floor underlayment nailed into sheets of plywood, which are secured into the joists. The research suggested that we shouldn’t install the HW over existing cork since it might deteriorate. This stuff doesn’t seem like it’s cork, but some sort of particleboard. Do we need to remove that underlayment and the lay felt directly above the plywood? Or can we install above the underlayment?
