Problems with laminate floors

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but I always get good advice on the sub. My husband and I have a condo, and we decided to get new floors for the condo last year. My husband is an immigrant, and he always tries to support family friends in their business is when possible. I did not have a good feeling about this, but he wanted to go to a higher and flooring company because his mom’s friend worked there. She gave us a small discount on materials, like maybe a couple of hundred dollars, but we paid $5000 for perhaps 400 ft² of laminate. I thought we were overpaying, but my husband wanted the guarantee and wanted to support his mom’s friend’s business. The woman assured us that this laminate was virtually indestructible, and that the guarantee would be there unless the tenants somehow were able to scratch the surface.

The installation was a pretty horrible process. We were on a tight turnaround, and they were a few days late in a job that was only supposed to take a few days. The worker said that the floor needed to be leveled and that we could pay him directly to do this more cheaply. So we paid him. The worker cut the floor boards inside the house, causing dust to go everywhere, and then he blew the dust into the garden, which had been freshly landscaped. It was caked in dust for months and looked horrible. There were also gaps in between the edges of the floorboards and the wall. He was supposed to come back to fix this, but he never did. I took pictures of this in September. The installation was a pretty horrible process. We were on a tight turnaround, and they were a few days late in a job that was only supposed to take a few days. Some months later, our tenants noticed that the separator strips between the laminate and the tile flooring in the kitchen, the bathroom, and the entryway began to become loose. They began even tripping on these raised strips. I complained with all of this information back in May.

They took a long time to try to fix it, lots of problems with scheduling, and when the person came, he had no idea what was supposed to be fixed and was not well equipped to replace these strips. He asked the tenants to use their table and chairs to wait the strips and even asked whether they had dumbbells. They separated again, and after this man came, the tenants notice that the floors began to work, becoming spongy in some areas. They separated again, and after this man came, the tenants notice that the floors began to warp, becoming spongy in some areas. When we complained again, they said that the floor needed a full replacement and that they would not cover it because they believe moisture was coming in.

We responded with a timeline of events with time-stamped emails and photos. We said that they never fixed any of the initial problems that we asked, like the gaps that we had sent photos of. We also said that they did not properly fix the separator strips, and that they are claimed that there was moisture coming in does not make sense because the separator strips are coming loose at every Junction. There would have to be plumbing all over the underfloor that is leaking all over the underfloor. They escalated this to a supervisor. The supervisor said that they believe that the tenants miss used the floor. They said that there was a strong smell of beer and that that could be the cause of the moisture. They also said that they were bikes and skateboards, suggesting that these were not serious people.

Our tenants are serious people. They are all in elite engineering or pre-medical programs.bWhen they moved in I asked neighbors to tell me if they were having loud parties before going to the HOA, and they said that they are always quiet.

They have bikes because they cannot store them outside per the HOA rules, also, their bikes are very high end because they are competitive cyclists, and we gave them permission to store them inside. The condo is very small, and of course they could not ride the bikes inside. They are very high achieving and serious people, and they are most certainly not pouring beer down the floorboards or acting like rowdy buffoons.

I feel very strongly that this is character defamation for the company not to pay and that the company is making up excuses. We also discovered that one of the strips between the floor and the sliding door leading to the outside is also separating in a space that has no foot traffic.

I’m wondering what you all think of this. It is strange to me that they would claim that there is moisture because we had carpet there before, and there was no mold in the carpet when we ripped it up. Could it be that the floor was leveled and not properly sealed? Have you heard of any of these problems?
