How and which direction do I turn a pipe wrench to loosen?

I know super stupid but here it goes, do I turn the pipewrench to the right or to the left to loosen? Having trouble removing gas cylinder from my chair but I want to know the correct direction, lefty loosey but i don't know how that applies to this? I am guessing going to the left will loosen?
