Working on adding a smart switch to my kitchen, of course it is a three way switch. when I opened the box before ordering, I double checked that there is a neutral wire. good news, there is.
in box 1, there are two switches. Left switch is for the garage light. simple, i understand this, it makes sense with everything else I have run across and expect. I'm leaving this as a dumb switch as the garage is always on.
The right switch is my three way. The incoming power appears to be the middle cable. I have 120VAC between the black and ground, with both light off, and on (this makes sense). I would normally believe that this comes directly from the electrical panel, except that there is a red connector, and that it is wired into the switch.
Box 2 is wired with two lights. light on the left will be a dumb light, light on the right is the other 3 way switch.
Now my confusion. And questions.
the incoming line (middle cable black) is crimped to a traveler (right cable red). so this is now always hot.
My switch traveler is connected to what I thought was the incoming power traveler (which i still don't know why it exists).
I drew it out on paper, and still have as much confusion as ever.
what is going on, why does it appear that the incoming power is wired into the traveler? any guidance is appreciated.
Even something where the incoming power goes to the light itself doesn't make sense, example in figure B.

Here are the switch boxes, source of frustration.
smart switch I am using:
this is not usually an issue for me, but it didn't make sense so I put it all back together without making any changes.
Cheers!
