Advice on joint filler for old brick and stone pavers (some of which are already partially filled with polymeric sand)?

So, I sort of screwed up the beginning of my project, and I'd appreciate any advice on where to go from here. I'm filling joints in a very old brick and stone-paved patio that was made by the former owner of my house. (Pictured. I know the brick-laying job is ugly compared to professional work, but I don't mind it, and it's easier to fill the joints than to tear everything out.) Anyway, I'm dumb and short-sighted; only after I'd filled a single corner with a bag of expensive polymeric sand did I fully realize just how much it will cost to use this (admittedly very cool) material everywhere I need to use it. I can't afford it.

I've searched this sub and discovered recommendations for 1) mason's sand or 2) a mix of 80% regular sand and 20% Portland cement. Is there any problem putting either of these against the area I already filled with polymeric? Would you recommend one or the other as better for my purposes here (brick and stone, some large gaps up to 2" or 3")? Are there pros or cons to either one over time (e.g., weed growth, needing repair sooner, etc.)?

If you don't recommend either option, I'd appreciate any feedback on that, too.
