moving a gas fireplace and need help with plugging up end of gas pipe so i don’t die

with the weather improving i’d like to move our unattached gas fireplace somewhere less obtrusive. is there any reason i can’t just unscrew the handle used to turn it on and off and add a simple plug where the tube went? or is there something special it would need.
