I'm doing some kitchen remodeling and in the process, we ripped down some old backsplash, only to find that the drywall behind it is badly deteriorated. No problem. Just go get some new drywall, rip the old stuff out, and put the new stuff in. However, the old drywall seems to be hard as a rock. We were able to cut the new drywall into pieces with a razor, but we can barely scratch the old stuff. We managed to pry a few pieces out and when they fell on the countertop, they sounded hollow, almost like plaster. So two questions: Am I dealing with old, hardened drywall? And if so, how do I remove it?
