Lighting up a tapestry from behind with LEDs?

I bought this tapestry a few days ago and thought it'd be cooler with some RGB lighting. Specifically, I want to illuminate each individual lantern and some of the glare effects towards the top, somehow using individually cut LEDs.

Do you guys with LED room lighting experience have any tips for how I'd go about doing this?
