Hi, I moved into a rental house and want to plug in my dryer. The dryer outlet has 3 wires: pos, neg, and ground. Unfortunately it does not have a receptacle for 3 or 4 prong cords, it accepts the three wires directly with a ring terminal. There is a general circuit breaker box with this outlet on there, the junction box also has a relay and two fuses. My question is whether it is safe to purchase a 3 prong dryer cable (30a 220v capable) and cut off the prongs, and place ring terminals on the cable so that my dryer is compatible with the old style breaker box. My understanding is that since the year 2000, 4 prong terminals are required but if your home has a 3 prong you are OK with replacing a 3 prong. But is it safe to have my dryer connected via ring terminal to this old school breaker box? Thanks [link] [comments] |
