Old house trying to restore the stairwell's side panel made of wood? Ideas & opinions Inspiration all welcome

Hi there guys, currently struggling and stuck. Just through lack of knowledge of what i can do with it.

Here are some pictures of the staircase wall ( I don't actually know what they are called makes it hard to search!)

Little back story:

Doing up my mums house (I'm a student and my brothers a plasterer, but we are both quite handy with our hands) so budget is low. we originally wanted to rip it all out and try replace the wall with something else to help open up our cellar more and open up the hallway. but for now that is out of the question just for the amount of work it would all take, and cost of it all. (Probably need more people in).

Just wondering what we could do (don't mind learning and getting pieces of timber etc.) how could we kickstart this and bring this wall into the 2050's? it is an old house with an old staircase, it was covered in cream paint before, but we've sanded all that off. the timber also has little gaps in which we can see when the light is on in the cellar and the light shines through.

Solutions we thought

1)We presume the easiest solution is to just, sand the flaky paint a bit more, stick some wood primer on / undercoat it and paint it a colour, using a filler for the gaps

2) get thin timber panels and place them in front of the old stair well, and just cut to shape. then could paint or something?

3) (me brainstorming) wouldn't mind cutting out a thin rectangle for a small lengthy glass window to go in (wouldn't know how viable that would be, but sounded pretty cool in my head)

I just want to bring a modern/ futuristic look to this (under a budget) if possible. but dont know the ins and outs. could anyone help suggest anything that we could use
