[HELP] Building a wooden gate that will attach to a brick wall

Hi All,

I would like to build a wooden gate that will be about 5' 1/2" wide and 6' tall.

I've purchases the fence pickets, some 2x6 for the horizontal braces and diagonal cuts, hinge hardware, nails, and a 4x4. As far as I know, all the wood is douglass fur.

Why I need help

The hinges will attach to a 4x4, which I want to attach to a red brick wall - not cinderblocks. I THINK I would want to use lag screws, but I don't know the length and the diameter. Do I need anchors in the holes first and the lag screws secured into them? Are lag screws the right thing to use? Is it a good idea to use washers? If so, do they need to be inside the countersunkin area or above it?

Feel free to link to amazon, home depot, lowes for a parts list.

Thanks for all the expertise you're able to provide!
