Floating Bench for Nook, Alclove or Closet

If you have nook space or an alcove, or a closet you'd like to convert to a mudroom, a DIY floating bench is an inexpensive and easy way to add seating.  It's also sturdy and very functional - about seven years ago, we built this mudroom bench and it still looks great and has held up well.

floating bench DIY

We also added trundle drawers underneath and a coat organizer above.

floating bench with drawers

Since this tutorial, we've seen some great customizations for this project!

built in hall tree

Julie added a back detail to make her floating bench look like a built in hall tree.  We also love the center leg for additional support for longer spans. More photos and details here.

We love this stained version with inset shelves by The Schmidt Home!  This is also brilliant because you can double stack tall boots over smaller shoes.

For a deeper bench, hinging the back up allows for easy access to taller boots - customization and photos by HMCTAGG

This mudroom system by Mathew40SU is finished beautifully!  We love the stained bench seat that sits on top of the framing and front trim, and the back detailing.

  • Easy to build design based off one sheet of plywood (minimal waste or scraps)
  • No pocket holes - just screw together with construction screws
  • Looks finished and beautiful
  • Good size fits logs up to 24" long and holds about a quarter of a cord of wood
  • Contains the bark and mess to inside the wood box
  • Protects the wall behind the wood box
  • Very sturdy and well made, will hold up for a long time

Breadboard Ends: The Joint Most People Get Wrong

Breadboard ends can be an attractive addition to table tops or panels. When made properly, they can also help stabilize panels and keep them flat. Unfortunately, many folks get them wrong. Before we dig into that let’s first establish what a breadboard end is. Have you ever seen a large farmhouse style table where the ends feature cross-grain boards (something like the picture below)? That’s a breadboard end. What many people fail to consider is that simply gluing and screwing a board to the end of a panel is actually a recipe for disaster. As the table top expands and contracts with seasonal humidity across its width, the breadboard fights that movement. Tension builds up and eventually the top will crack. The breadboard may also begin to pull away from the table creating unsightly gaps. So the real magic of a breadboard end happens when you allow for that seasonable movement. Using good joinery and drawbore pins, we can pull the breadboard end tight to the table while still allowing the table the grow and shrink as needed.

Consider this your guide for how to do that using four different methods.

Please note that breadboards are NEVER necessary. A properly-milled and constructed panel should generally stay flat under normal conditions, so the only time I add a breadboard end is if I think the design benefits from it visually. Learn to make nice flat panels here.

2: The Long Tenon Method

3: The G&G Inspired Screw Method

What is Your Go-to Tool?

Rob Johnstone photoA friend of mine on Facebook recently posted an image of his 6-in. combination square and said he can’t do any woodworking without that tool in his apron. I had to agree with him that I would be lost without a combo square within reach, but my choice is a 12-in. model. (He must work to finer measurements than me.)

Which got me thinking of other items that I go to each time I am in the shop. I have a tape measure that is smallish overall (about 1-1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in. square) but has a wide, easy-to-read tape surface. When I misplace that baby, I am annoyed. (Although sometimes I find it still in my hand when I am “looking” for it.)

What about you? Do you have a cadre of tools that you reach for when you are getting down to business? I think your answers will be fascinating.

Shop Time: Control What We Can

Last week Rob reminded us that regardless of election outcomes, our shops are still places of calm refuge in unsettled times. Several readers have responded. – Editor

“Oh but you are very naïve. Depending on what happens (in today’s election), tomorrow and every day after could be very different. If nothing is going to change, then why vote? Why even have an election? And I am not being partisan, this is true whatever your or my political leaning. No insult intended but please think about your statement and mine.” – Don Rawls

“I’ve been hiding in my shop for weeks. I’m sick of all the noise and hoopla and dire warnings of the end of our republic. I don’t think so. Even if the ‘wrong’ guy wins, we’ll survive. My closest friend, also my best woodworking buddy, was told by his daughter-in-law that if he didn’t vote for her candidate, he could forget ever seeing his grandchildren again. What idiot would make such a threat? He asked my advice, which was to vote his conscience. If she decides to cut him off from his grandchildren, who love their grandpa dearly, she’ll have to explain why. Crazy. I’m drawing up plans for my next project, which will have plenty of mortises and tenons. Maybe some hand-cut dovetails as well. And Santa’s workshop already has a long list pending. Plenty of time, right? One thing I know will be true tomorrow: no more stupid TV ads and no more nuisance political calls. I’m rejoicing.” – Steve Dragg

“I am re-organizing (or rather, organizing for the first time) my shop and have several table saw blades that I would like to store safely. Any ideas?” – Dave Fogt

“(Your editorial was) spot on as always! I’m just going to hang loose until the first Monday after the second Wednesday of December to see who is going to be in the White House come 20 January.” – Elaine D.

Learn how to attach wood veneer to a plywood substrate. Veneer is a thin piece of solid wood. Plywood is most commonly used as the substrate because it is dimensionally stable, meaning that it does not expand and contract much with changes in temperature or humidity. Veneer is attached to the substrate with wood glue.

Shop Refuge

Rob Johnstone photoApparently, something important is going on today here in the U.S. So many people I know are pretty worked up — scared, sad, angry, worried, frustrated…the list goes on. I confess that I am a person who pays way too much attention to politics. But here are a couple of things I know to be true. Tomorrow and the next day and the next will continue as they always have. And it is better to spend those days in the shop than nearly anywhere else.

As Solomon said, “There is nothing new under the sun. But there are woodworking shops, and that’s pretty cool!” (That second sentence, I’ll admit, is challenged by some scholars…)

So, I hope today finds you focused on mortises and tenons, gluing up lumber and cleaning your shop — all things that we have a chance of controlling (the cleaning part is questionable in my shop). Remember, the only two things in life you can’t avoid are death and wood movement.

Fortnite Sign Via CNC

I wanted to make something special for my son Mateo’s 9th birthday. His favorite game is Fortnite so I thought it would be cool to pull in a graphic of his favorite skin (Agent Peely) and include his gamer tag in a carving. My new shop assistant Jon did all the heavy-lifting with the Powermatic CNC side of things and we tag-teamed the painting and finishing work. While this isn’t our usual kind of “project” I thought it would still be fun to show the process. And there’s nothing like making something in the shop that causes a kid’s face to light up!

Face Frame Wall Kitchen Cabinet Template

One of the big reasons you'd want to build your own kitchen cabinets is to be able to customize the size.  So I decided to create a template that is easy to adjust and customize on our sister site, Shelf Help, that has a free design configurator.  Here' the links:

Face Frame Kitchen Base Cabinet Template

There are three big benefits to building your own kitchen cabinets: Customization and quality, and affordability.

When you build your own cabinets, you can choose better materials.

When you build your own cabinets, extras like crown moulding or open shelves or an odd size don't cost a fortune.  It's actually quite reasonable!

But most important, when you build your own cabinets, you can customize.

No more filler strips.  Place your appliances exactly where you want them.  Go as tall as you want with wall cabinets.

To help you customize, I created a free design configurator that is super simple to use, and a template that guides you through constructing your own kitchen cabinets!  Here's the links:

Enjoy and please share if you build, we can't wait to see how your kitchens turn out!

November/December 2020 Issue Preview

‘Tis the season to build gifts, and in this new issue you’ll have plenty of easy-to-build options! Good sense should dictate getting a head start on them as soon as possible, but we’ve got you covered — even if the holidays are already in full swing.

Cartographer’s Coffee Table: While this hasn’t been the best year to travel, we take the style of a vintage map-maker’s cabinet and give it fresh purpose with a thick top, stylish hardware and practical drawer storage. Call it our 2020 homage to wanderlust.

Cordless Charging Table: If you sometimes put off cell phone charging because of the hassle of plug-in cords, this veneered side table provides a hidden wireless solution that can top up your phone while you sleep.

Two Wall Clock Plans: Even in the digital age, analog wall clocks can still make practical and fun-to-make gifts. Here are two versions you can build with a CNC machine or a handheld router and Rockler’s number templates.

Four Simple Holiday Gifts: Gift-giving doesn’t have to be expensive if you’re a clever woodworker. These quick, easy projects can be made from scrap-bin cutoffs or careful culling from the firewood pile at next to no cost.

Woodturning: Wooden spatulas and spoons are ideal for today’s coated cast-iron cookware. Ernie Conover demonstrates the process of making both options.

Tool Tutorial: Sharpening tool edges doesn’t have to be tedious or time-consuming if you add some voltage to the process. Here’s a survey of several powered sharpening systems to consider.

Tool Preview: RIKON’s new VSR 70-3040 full-size lathe solves the problem of limited swing and spindle capacity with a stacked bed that grows at the twist of a knob.

Hardworking Woods: Red oak has been a mainstay in woodworking and cabinetry for a long time. Learn more about this practical and plentiful North American species.

Six Simple Finishes: Blotching can be a bugaboo when staining close-grained hardwoods like maple, birch or cherry. Here’s a simple finishing regimen to help avoid the problem.

What’s in Store: If Santa could use a few ideas for you under the tree, here’s a sampling of new products worthy of wrapping paper and a bow.

VIDEO: Rikon Lathe 70-3040 Overview

RIKON Power Tools has an industry-first solution for increasing capacity on its 70-3040 full-sized lathe. And it doesn’t involve change-overs or buying any extra accessories. You can increase both its swing over bed and distance between centers at the turn of a dial! This lathe’s solid-steel bed is double-stacked and interlocked on a rail system. Between the two beds, a separate 24-volt DC motor drives a continuous lead screw and actuator to slide the lathe’s top bed section open or closed. The mechanism is sealed inside a tubular casing with an IP54 rating, to protect it from dust and moisture. Powering it from fully closed to fully open takes about half a minute.

2020 Guild Scholarship Recipients

This year our Guild scholarship distribution was handled a little differently. When Covid shut schools down in March we put out an open invitation to shop teachers in Middle & High School to reach out to us for help with their online learning plans. We had many requests and we were able to fulfill every single one because of the generous scholarship donations.

Even though this happened in March, we wanted to recognize the teachers teaching in such a challenging time and also thank the kind donations to help get all of these teachers set up in the Guild to share the videos with their students.

We will open our scholarship application again in May 2021. If you would like to donate toward the fund you can find more information here.

The Taper Maker

Over the years, I’ve made a lot of tapers. I usually cobble together a one-time use jig from scrap and throw it away when I’m done. And while there are a lot of tapering jig/sled designs out there I couldn’t find anything that inspired me enough to build or buy it. So I challenged my buddy Andy Klein with the task of coming up with a tapering sled that not only accommodates just about any taper I’d need to make, but also does it in a way that’s quick and easy to adjust. That’s what we’re introducing today: The Taper Maker

It features a single cam handle that adjust up and down as needed with three spring-loaded hold-downs. The sled can accommodate nearly 2.5″ of thickness on my saw and almost 36″ in length. It can be used for tapers as well as straight line rips for jointing operations.

We offer a hardware kit and plans if you’d like to make one for yourself. With most fancy tapering jigs on the market going for over $100, we think this is a great cost-effective solution.

By the way, if you want to see Andy using the jig for a cool project, check this out.

No Tricks Here

Rob Johnstone photoOne of my favorite holidays is soon to be here. I really like Halloween, because on a normal year, I get to see the costumed kids walking the neighborhood. That’s big fun, and I always buy more candy than we could possibly hand out. The extra somehow finds its way to my shop, so there’s no bigger win/win in my book. But this is not a regular year…I don’t know about you, but my candy consumption has been at a high level for the last eight months.

Shop made wooden blaster

The kids around here have been wearing masks and hanging out in the neighborhood all summer (same as me). Even so, my grandchildren are laser focused on the holiday —as the blaster project mentioned last week demonstrated.

So have some fun with the scary holiday, however you can make it work. And then, onto holiday gifts (unless you have completed them already…yeah, right).
