Next you will outline the tree onto a piece of 1/4" plywood and cut it out with a jig saw. (Check your scrap pile, or purchase a 2'x4' panel).

You will want to clamp the top of the tree and make sure you are shooting the nails in at the correct angle.

For each section added to the top there is a 1/2" overlap, so I used my multi marking tool and set it to a half inch.

I lined up the next piece with my mark, added glue and attached using brad nails.

Flip and repeat. For the bottom tree section, I used a 1x spacer to hold it up and in place to attach the nails.

Finally, glue and nail the bottom section and it's time to finish! I decided to use spray paint on some and others I used stain. I love the stained "trunk" as an added accent!

Cedar Fence Picket Christmas Tree Decor

Why I Built this Project

I wanted to create easy Christmas tree decor with scrap lumber that I had on hand. Cedar fence pickets are only a few dollars if you don't have any scrap pieces laying around. I also had some scrap 1x3 pieces on hand, but you could also rip the fence pickets to get the back and bottom attached. Overall I'm super happy with this project that only took me about 30 minutes to build from start to finish. This cute tree adds the perfect festive decor for my countertop! I had fun playing around with how to top it off with some fun decor items from our local craft store. I love that you can use it with a candle or add an ornament to dress it up.

Why We Love this Cedar Fence Picket Christmas Tree

  • Easy to build using minimal tools
  • It's free if you have scrap wood laying around and very inexpensive if not
  • Only took 1/2 hour to build from start to finish
  • Dress up with your favorite ornament or candle
  • Build for friends, family or to sell at craft fairs
  • Build multiple trees and finish to your liking

How I Built this Project

I cut all of my pieces according to the cut list, sanded each piece and laid them out flat.

I added glue to the 1x3 backing, leaving 3/4" for the base overhanging.
