How to Use a Pocket Hole Jig

What is a Pocket Hole Jig?

A pocket hole jig is a woodworking tool used to hold wood boards in place, so you can use your drill to drill angled holes into a piece of wood. These holes, called pocket holes, allow screws to join two pieces of wood together securely and invisibly, either edge to edge like a tabletop, perpendicular, or even at different angles.  The result is a clean, strong joint that’s perfect for furniture, cabinetry, and various woodworking and DIY projects.

Benefits of Using a Pocket Hole Jig

  • Strong Joints: Pocket hole joinery creates strong, durable connections.
  • Edge to Edge Joints: You can join boards edge to edge, for tabletops, face frames, and doors.
  • Attach Big Pieces of Wood Together: You can use a pocket hole jig to attach boards to big posts, like table legs.
  • Hidden Screws: The screws are hidden inside the wood, giving your project a polished look.
  • Easy to Use: Even beginners can achieve professional results with a pocket hole jig.
  • Professional: This jig is so useful, many pros use it for cabinet making.
  • Inexpensive: You can get into a pocket hole jig and tons of screws and accessories for a couple hundred dollars.
  • Versatile: Suitable for a wide range of woodworking projects.

How Do I Use a Pocket Hole Jig?

Using a pocket hole jig is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

What You’ll Need:

  • Pocket Hole Jig (e.g., Kreg 720)
  • Drill
  • Pocket Hole Screws
  • Wood Clamps
  • Wood Pieces
  • Measuring Tape
  • Pencil

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Set Up Your Pocket Hole Jig and Workspace

Set up a clean, level workspace that you can use for building on.  Attach your pocket hole jig to a scrap piece of wood, about 12" x 24" in size, so the jig is stabilized.

2. Plan and Measure

Using scrap wood, determine where you want the pocket holes to be drilled and make marks.  Measure the thickness of the wood piece you are planning to drill the pocket hole into.

3. Adjust the Jig

Set the jig to match the thickness of your wood you are drilling the pocket holes into. Some pocket hole jigs like the Kreg 720, have adjustable settings to accommodate different thicknesses, so you can skip this step.

4. Adjust the Drilling Bit Collar

On the drilling bit, there will be a collar that determines how deep the drill bit drills into the wood.  Adjust the collar to match the thickness of your wood you are drilling into.  Different pocket hole jigs have different guides to help you set the collar location.

5. Drill the Pocket Holes

Place your wood piece into the jig and clamp it securely.  Insert the drilling bit into your drill and secure firmly. Align it with the guide holes in the jig and drill. The stop collar on the drill bit ensures you drill to the correct depth every time.

6. Assemble Your Pieces

Align your wood pieces so that the pocket holes are where you need them. Use wood clamps to hold them in place.

7. Drive the Screws

Determine the appropriate sized screw for your joint, most pocket hole jigs will come with screw sizing guides.  Using pocket hole screws, join the wood pieces together. The screws are driven into the pocket holes at an angle, pulling the pieces together tightly and creating a strong joint.

U Shaped Table or Desk for School

Why We Made this Plan

A favorite brag post on this blog has long been Jeff McClure's U shaped desk for his wife's kindergarten classroom.

From preschool teachers, to homeschooling parents, and even kindergarten teachers have asked for this plan.

We drew inspiration from Jeff's amazing design, but used 1x boards for the top as they tend to be smoother. We added a frame underneath to support the 1x boards.
