[Help][Metalworking] looking for info on gilding with non-gold metals

I have a project in mind that I would want to add a few metals (namely iron, steel, and tin) onto leather as a highlight/detail. I am thinking something like gilding should work but I've never done anything of the sort before. I'm concerned about the iron and steel rusting. Is there something I could do to prevent rust/tarnish without impacting the aesthetic? Not to mention, I dont really know if these metals can even be gilded.

Any advise/input is welcome, I dont really know what I'm doing, if I dont get some help I might not do this at all.
